Learn Hebrew alphabet

As I write this, the Jewish community is currently celebrating Passover (Pesach in Hebrew). This year, on Passover eve, we paused to remember the 80th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising. I cannot imagine how children in the Warsaw Ghetto managed to string together the words learn Hebrew alphabet. Was ancient Hebrew so embedded in their lives that that did not have to practice the alef bet? However, there was a vibrant Jewish life in Poland before the advent of the Holocaust. I am sure, prior to being forced into the ghetto that the children attended learning to learn Hebrew reading in preparation for their Bar Mitzvahs.

Learning Hebrew with aleph bet flashcards

Indeed, learning Hebrew with aleph bet flashcards may have been used in their day-to-day lives to help them learn Hebrew. This would have stopped when the Shoah started. Whilst this is a weighty topic to write about, it is essential to reflect on how the concept of learn Hebrew alphabet survived the Warsaw Ghetto and, indeed, the Holocaust, or in Hebrew, the Shoah.

I am not a scholar of the Holocaust; however, the fact that this ancient language endured and is being used today is a testament to the fact that it survived the Holocaust. Even if the children did not have lessons to learn reading and writing of the Hebrew alphabet, Hebrew was part of their lives. Even though the Jewish people knew of the liquidation of the ghetto, they still prepared for Pesach.

I found an excerpt from a book by Tuvia Borzykowski describing how, the seder continued in the ghetto: Amidst this destruction, the table in the center of the room looked incongruous with glasses filled with wine, with the family seated around, the rabbi reading the Haggadah. His reading was punctuated by explosions and the rattling of machine guns….

Ancient Hebrew

Ancient Hebrew has survived for over two thousand years, during the Middle Ages, during the Renaissance, during the Holocaust, during the establishment of the State of Israel and post-establishment. Biblical Hebrew is integral to the continuity of Judaism and Jewish texts and will continue to be taught.

Fortunately, in the age of technology, many people download printable PDF documents of the alef bet to practice their handwriting. This is an easy way to learn each letter. It helps people to learn the aleph from the bet! The Hebrew text is nothing like English, so it helps to download worksheets to practice. I’m sure this is being done for other languages too, include Arabic.

As I examine the need to learn Hebrew, I researched some statistics; even though six million Jewish people were murdered in the Holocaust; the Nazis failed to eliminate the Jewish people. Indeed, according to Wikipedia, as of 2023, the world's "core" Jewish population (those identifying as Jews above all else) was estimated at nearly 16 million. The number of Jewish people in the world rises to 18 million when people who are “connected’ to the Jewish population are also included; comprising of people who identify as ‘partly Jewish’ or that have Jewish backgrounds from at least one Jewish parent. Furthermore, the numbers will be even higher if we count people who are not Jewish living with Jewish people.

Having counted all those who are eligible for Israeli citizenship under Israel's Law of Return, in addition to counting the Israeli Jews, this raises the total number to 23.8 million. That is 23.8 million people who have the opportunity to engage in learning the Hebrew language one way or another. Some people have face-to-face lessons and others use an online Hebrew program such as Easy Learn Hebrew. These days learning Hebrew is so much more accessible due to the ability to access technology.

However, we need to understand that there is a digital divide around the world. Not everyone has equitable access to smartphones, tablets, laptops, and the internet. This was especially evident during the COVID-19 Pandemic when children had to attend lessons at home. I remember a teacher at my son’s school saying that some children had a share a laptop with three other siblings.

We must not assume that everyone can download the PDF aleph bet flashcards. It is important that Hebrew lessons are available to all Jewish people worldwide regardless of their economic status, and regardless of their access to technology, the internet, and associated devices. If Hebrew could survive the Holocaust, we need to ensure that it continues now, regardless of the digital divide.
