Learning To Read Hebrew

Rabbi Richard G. Lampert

Learning to read Hebrew

For some people the idea of learning to read Hebrew is such a foreign concept. In fact, some people have not even heard of the Hebrew language! However, for others it is extremely important for so many different reasons. Some people start learning to read Hebrew because they want to learn to read the bible, the Torah, in the original text. Christians call the Torah the Old Testament. They believe that in order to fully understand the Christian additions, what is called the New Testament, they need to read the Torah in the original text as part of their learning.

Another reason people start learning to read Hebrew is that they are converting to Judaism, and they want to reading the prayers in the service and at home on Jewish festivals. Furthermore, in the conversion ceremony they will be required to read certain prayers in Hebrew. For many people who are undertaking a conversion, they are adults with busy lives, so it is important to take their time with learning to read Hebrew, as it is a new skill that needs to be learnt and can take time to be comfortable with reading.

Another group of people who need to start learning to read Hebrew are Bar and Bat Mitzvah students. However, it is more of “have to” as opposed to “want to” learn to read Hebrew. For Jewish children aged 13 they need to start learning to read Hebrew at least a year or two before they have the Bar or Bat Mitzvah ceremony so they can learn all the prayers in Hebrew, as well as read (or chant) from the Torah. In order for him or her to be confident, learning to read Hebrew needs to start as early as possible, allowing the student to develop the confidence required to read Hebrew in front of the congregation.

    Learning To Read Hebrew

The Easy Learn Hebrew story began in 1986 when I became involved with Rabbi Lampert's teaching methods as a tutor in the 'Learn To Read Hebrew In One Day' course.

This course took students, who could not read a word of Hebrew at the beginning of the day, and by the end of the day they could read Hebrew, slowly, but correctly.

In 1999, I completed my Bachelor of Arts majoring in Hebrew, and, as part of my degree, spent a year in Israel studying Hebrew at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. In 2008, I became the primary instructor for the 'Learn To Read Hebrew In One Day' course.

Whilst conducting these face to face courses it occurred to me that this unique classroom-based method could be transferred to an online format to make it accessible to people all around the world, and so the Easy Learn Hebrew program was born!

The Easy Learn Hebrew program is the 'Learn To Read Hebrew In One Day' classroom course 'online', however offering much more in terms of being able to revise the 'classroom' content online repeatedly via the videos, take the online quizzes and being able to print out the associated hard copy learning materials as required.

I am very excited to make this program available and look forward to welcoming you as an online Easy Learn Hebrew student.
