Every time I teach new pupils they always struggle with the Hebrew pronunciation. The students always want to write the English letters next the Hebrew word. They think that this will help with the pronunciation. It probably would help in the short term (very short term!). But it will not teach the student to read properly.
This reminds me of when I was 16 years old. I was involved in a Hebrew class that was doing a presentation at the Synagogue. One of the girls had written all the Hebrew in English letters. I refer to it as “Heblish” (Hebrew English). The Rabbi saw this and rubbed out all the English letters. It turned out that she could not read a word of the Hebrew without the help of the English.
Proper Hebrew pronunciation
Every time I have a new student, I use the above example. I use this in the very first lesson, because in the first lesson this is what most people do. They write in English letters. I explain to them to really learn to read correctly and to have fluent Hebrew pronunciation, they need to do the hard yards. They need to stumble and make mistakes. They will eventually become fluent this way.
